As a lurker/upperclassman perspective: I really wanted to do DME, but I got DOE instead and ended up enjoying it. You stay fairly busy and scheduled, but at the same time, you get a more leisurely introduction to MIT and get to meet neat upperclassmen who really care about their major and are more than happy to talk about what to expect your freshman year, what the fun things to do during rush are, etc. I thought it was a really good experience.

As far as stuff goes: Believe it or not, in the past, people were encouraged to bring only a suitcase to the first week of orientation. I got by with a couple of suitcases until I'd moved into my final dorm (EC->Random), and then had boxes shipped to me (or bought things like plates if it was cheaper than shipping). You stay in the same room for your FPOP as for rush, but don't get too attached to it--even if you stay in your temp dorm, there's no guarantee you'll live in that room or even on that floor. You'll almost certainly move at least within a dorm, so it's in your best interest to pack as lightly as possible.
